This web site has been constructed to assist business and industry in complying with the various aspects of the Colorado Springs Fire Department Hazardous Material Management Plan. Numerous Federal, State, and local hazardous materials laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances impact businesses and industries in Colorado Springs.

This plan was originally developed as an informational document used to describe the controls installed as required by the International Fire Code, and as a resource for emergency response personnel. The HMMP served a slightly different purpose than SARA Title III and the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. The documents are similar, yet they serve different purposes. We have strived to modify this HMMP to include SARA Title III contingency planning requirements and OSHA Hazard Communication Standard requirements. The resulting format will satisfy these requirements while not losing sight of its original purpose.

We realize that it is laborious for business and industry to maintain all of these requirements. In order to simplify the compliance procedure, we will use forms and recommended formats that combine the requirements from OSHA, SARA Title III, and the International Fire Code into one format.

Much effort has been made to ensure that the HaMISH System can be used by any facility that uses, stores, and handles hazardous materials. This system can be used to manage a facility with as many separate buildings, units, and containment areas as are needed. Some facilities consist of only a single room within a building and others may be a campus-like facility of many buildings.
